As you read this, I can envision your pupils dilating and your heart rate increasing while the memories of this shoe launching back in 1997 come flashing back to you. The éS 197 changed the game and raised the bar for all skate shoes that followed. It was the first to feature premium quality nubuck leather overlapping durable suede and breathable mesh, as well as a pioneering double cup sole with a Polyurethane mid sole that was a stroke of genius during a period of industry product stagnation. By embracing the DNA of the past, the éS 197 allows you to to step confidently into the future and achieve unprecedented levels of success. Amen.

Awesome shoe

Let’s get the obvious out of the way. It’s an awesome, dope looking shoe. Haven’t skated this shoe yet, and don’t know if I will but you know Es makes good skate shoes, so no doubts there. Now, the fit. Fit is true to size. Toe box is slightly snug but not too bad. I have a wider than average foot. 4.25” at the widest part to be exact. I imagine the shoe will stretch a tad bit with time and then the fit should be perfect. Don’t get half a size up. The shoe will just slide off your heel. If your foot is any wider than 4.25” just get a different shoe. Only thing I don’t really like about this shoe are the cheap insoles they provide with it. They have no cushioning at all and feel really hard on the feet. There’s also zero arch support, but I guess that’s normal with skate shoes. Should be an easy fix by inserting different quality insoles. Other than that, the rest of the shoe is comfortable. I would buy this shoe again almost purely based off how awesome they look. Wish they came in more colorways.

Of all the K1s I’ve had…

These are lighter than any es or lakai version, the mesh on the top cap creases on one of them but I own a new pair of es k1s again so I’m stoked. I’ve had them since Dec. they do feel kinda cheap compared to the accel or schemes.

high quality K1 throwback. minus bottom sole texture

I cant stop buying this shoe because I fantasize daily of having a lifetime supply of them. I am not emotionally prepared to have a "last pair" of these shoes.

The Silo SC (mesh) has a similar fit/feel but the one nine 7s hold up quite a bit longer before blowing out. Both have narrow grooves on the bottom of the shoe that are 3mm deep and <2mm wide- which cruelly makes for the perfect tiny pebble-picker-upper. Every time I step outside I collect tiny pebbles that become tightly wedged into the sole (griptape killer). I bring a nylon brush to help clean the sole before each session. Fingers crossed this style shoe is allowed to have a normal sole someday.

My experience for build quality for each colorway goes in this order- Navy/gum > White/red = black/lime = black/gum > white/gum (toecaps had odd stitching and the shoe was overly stiff). I think the white/gum was the launch colorway a ~2 years ago and ever since then the quality has been better.

I would recommend using sturdier insoles with these shoes, anything 3-5mm fits well. I personally did not like the feel of these with the STI Energy Foam Insole either. Even if you are just using them for walking around the stock insoles flatten pretty quickly.

I am very thankful that Es gives you an extra pair of laces with every pair of shoes. Love the flat laces with these throwbacks.

After seeing Creager get the bubble in the heel for his throwback its been tough holding back the tears knowing that it's still technologically possible to craft shoes that way and that someone must have decided to ditch the bubble when designing the one nine 7s.

Es one nine 7 ,- navy/gum

,ummm.
I bought these shoes in navy/gum when they dropped .
There is a issue with the toes ,for some odd reason the es top tag makes the toe fake mesh crease, causing the whole stitching on the nubuck suede to fold crooked,
I recommend the people at es to maybe look into this,and/or apply some more beefier materials, maybe just eliminate the whole mesh deal in general, and use the same material in the top "e" layer throughout.
Love the product, except that issue thou,
Thanks!

Please make another size 6!!!

I used to have these shoes in a couple of colors back in the day. I would love to buy them again but you’re out of my size 😢 Bonus points if you reissue the navy or white with the gum sole.
